Vaccine Myths and Timelines

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

by Barbara Loe Fisher from nvic.org

There are two reasons why people perpetuate a lie, even if they are not the original creators of it. Some do it out of ignorance or carelessness. Others do it deliberately with full knowledge. Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether facts are falsified deliberately or out of ignorance. Whatever the case, it is important to set the record straight when distortion of facts perpetuate a lie, especially when the lives of human beings are at stake.

A June 3, Boston Globe OpEd authored by Paul Offit, M.D. is littered with factual errors that perpetuate pharmaceutical industry-created myths, which have been used for two decades to persuade Congress to pass laws shielding vaccine makers from liability for vaccine injuries and deaths, while giving drug companies huge financial incentives to develop vaccines and lobby for vaccine mandates. Offit blames parents of DPT vaccine injured children seeking financial support for their children for driving drug companies out of the vaccine business. He does this even though he knows perfectly well there are more drug companies producing childhood vaccines today than in 1982.

Vaccines or else: Parents blast order for schoolchildren

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland (CNN) — A crowd of frustrated parents gathered on a chilly Saturday morning outside Prince George’s County Circuit Court to comply with an order from the school system to have their children vaccinated — or else.

Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey, whose office began the effort, was at the courthouse to answer questions.

Judge C. Philip Nichols, who signed the letters threatening parents with jail or fines, said he felt the tactic worked.

“We got a thousand kids back in school just by sending one letter,” he said.

Environmental Mercury and Autism – Are Vaccines Still a Culprit?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

A new study released by The University of Texas demonstrated a clear connection between industrial mercury released and autism. Researchers studied Texas school district data and proximity of children to a mercury emitting site and found the prevalence of autism in the community was reduced the further away it was from the site.

Raymond F. Palmer said the study showed - for the first time in scientific literature - a statistically significant association between autism risk and proximity to the mercury source

Scary stuff. Parents and some in the medical field have, for some time, been concerned about mercury’s connection to autism. This of course led to questions about the mercury used as a preservative in childhood vaccines and its eventual removal…more or less. (more…)

Dr. Buttar Speaks - Thimerosal in Flu Vaccine? YES - Video Response

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

A week or so ago, we referenced a blog post by Ms. Marcella Piper-Terry on her blog entitled “Thimerosal in Flu Vaccine? YES” and it received quite a bit of attention.  It also received a rather lengthy reply from an Unknown blogger by the name of Skepacabra that runs some sort of Tabloid “News” type blog.  Skepacabra went on to call Dr. Buttar an anti-vaccine kook on his blog.  Dr. Buttar has done a video response to this mystery blogger and gives quite a bit of information about Thimerosal in Flu Vaccines which you can watch below.  Below that, I have also pasted Skepacabra’s reply that Dr. Buttar references in the videos.

They Say Any Press Is Good Press…

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

I found a blog post today (here) that made an extensive list of people who are responsible for the current measles outbreak.  Dr. Buttar was on this list.  I found this amusing but can’t help but struggle to see why having an opinion against injecting mercury into your body means that you are responsible for the measles.  At least Dr. Buttar was in good company. Among him were David Kirby (author of Evidence of Harm), and organizations such as Generation Rescue (Jenny McCarthy), Safe Minds, National Autism Association and Foundation for Autism Information and Research (F.A.I.R. Autism Media).

Anti-vaccination Individuals:

NY Times - Influenza Vaccine is losing reputation

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

A growing number of immunologists and epidemiologists say the vaccine probably does not work very well for people over 70, the group that accounts for three-fourths of all flu deaths.

The latest blow was a study in The Lancet last month that called into question much of the statistical evidence for the vaccine’s effectiveness.

The authors said previous studies had measured the wrong thing: not any actual protection against the flu virus but a fundamental difference between the kinds of people who get vaccines and those who do not.

This contention is far from universally accepted. And even skeptics say that until more effective measures are found, older people should continue to be vaccinated, because some protection against the flu is better than none.

Thimerosal in Flu Vaccine? YES

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Yesterday I spoke at a local private school, where I talked about Executive Dysfunction and the change in what is considered “normal” as our society moves along the continuum in response to changes in our environment.

After my presentation, there were a few educators present who had some questions regarding my work as a Defeat Autism Now! provider. One of those questions was regarding the flu vaccine and if there is thimerosal in it. The woman who asked the question reported to me that her daughter had asked her pediatrician about the safety of the flu vaccine because she was considering whether or not to give it to her child. The woman before me (the grandmother of said child) indicated that the pediatrician in question responded to the concerned mother, “Of course the flu vaccine is safe! There hasn’t been thimerosal in vaccines for six years!”

This is an outright lie.

A Mother’s Opinion on the Mercury Vaccine Autism Link

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

My son was injected with 12.5 micrograms of mercury the day after he was born. According to our government, the maximum safe limit for his weight would have been 0.4 micrograms (that’s point four, a fraction of a microgram).

A Mother’s Opinion from the NewsObserver.

Regarding the July 9 article “Parents push fringe remedy for autism“:

I find it incredibly hypocritical for anyone to suggest that treating a child with documented (yes, parents test for metals first) heavy-metal toxicity with a drug approved by the FDA for treatment in lead poisoning is “unethical” and lacks “reason” when our own government approved and mandated newborns be injected with more mercury than the government itself claims is safe.

My son was injected with 12.5 micrograms of mercury the day after he was born. According to our government, the maximum safe limit for his weight would have been 0.4 micrograms (that’s point four, a fraction of a microgram). That was only the beginning of infusion of mercury for him. So when we found out, we tested and then chelated our son and saw major improvements in him as a result. (more…)

Infant Study Casts Doubt on Vaccine-Autism Link

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

WASHINGTON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - The mercury in a vaccine preservative is pumped out of a baby’s body too quickly for it to do any damage, researchers reported on Wednesday in a study they say should further absolve shots of causing autism.

The study in the journal Pediatrics reinforces what many vaccine experts have said for years — that the form of mercury found in the preservative is handled differently by the body than the kind found in pollution and contaminated fish.

“It takes a certain amount of time and a certain concentration … to make it into the brain,” Dr. Michael Pichichero of the University of Rochester in New York, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.

Thimerosal is widely used to preserve vaccines and is made from a kind of mercury called ethyl mercury. It allows vaccines to be distributed in multi-dose containers.

“The World Health Organization has continued to sanction the use of thimerosal in vaccines because it has proven to save many lives by preventing bacterial contamination,” said Pichichero, who has served as a consultant to several vaccine manufacturers and the WHO.

Many studies have shown thimerosal is safe, but some vocal groups have continued to lobby against its use and it has been removed from all childhood vaccines in the United States except for some influenza vaccines.

Pichichero’s team studied 216 infants from R. Gutierrez Children’s Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where thimerosal is still routinely used in vaccines.

They were divided into three age groups to have their blood-mercury levels tested before and after they were immunized at their newborn, 2- or 6-month checkups.

Blood tests showed the half-life of ethyl mercury — the time it takes for the body to dispose of half of it — was 3.7 days. The more dangerous methyl mercury, known to damage nerves, has a half-life of 44 days.

GONE TOO FAST

“Until recently, that longer half-life was assumed to be the rule for both types of mercury,” Pichichero said. “Now it’s obvious that ethyl mercury’s short half-life prevents toxic build-up from occurring. It’s just gone too fast.”

The blood tests also showed most of the infants had methyl mercury in their blood, at safe levels, before they were ever vaccinated, he said.

Autism is marked by a variety of difficulties in social interaction and behavior, from the awkwardness of Asperger syndrome to severely debilitating repetitive behaviors and an inability to speak.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 150 children has autism or a related disorder in the United States.

Experts know genes play an important role. Because autism is often diagnosed in toddlers, who also have undergone a battery of childhood immunizations, some advocacy groups argue that the vaccines may have caused the condition.

The U.S. Institute of Medicine reported in 2004 that no link could be found between vaccines and autism and took the unusual step of urging researchers to look elsewhere for a cause.

The U.S. debate was renewed because ABC television is planning to debut a new legal drama this week with an episode in which a jury finds that a mercury-based preservative in a vaccine caused a child’s autism.

The American Academy of Pediatrics asked ABC to cancel the show but the network has refused.

In a separate study on Wednesday, a team at the University of Washington’s Autism Center reported that children with autism have normal-size heads at birth but develop accelerated head growth between six and nine months of age.

Vaccine Brochure Fails to Provide Information on Dangers

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

…the flu deaths in the US have been grossly exaggerated to increase vaccines sales. Specifically, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had claimed that there were 36,000 deaths from the flu for 2002, while a more comprehensive report showed that in reality there were only 736 for that year.

This week a brochure entitled: “Is your child safe? Information on vaccination” arrived inside one of the free newspapers in my region.

The 16-page booklet contained a number of graphic photos of children with disfiguring diseases and statements in coloured boxes, including: “Having the vaccine is several thousand times safer than having the disease the vaccine protects against, ” as well as information on “What is a Pandemic? ” Alarmingly, this brochure provided one side of the story, the scaremongering one that suits the drug companies, while failing to address the many very serious issues related to vaccine safety.
