Select Healthy Halloween Treats This Year

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Submitted by Tyler Woods Ph.D. on Oct 19th, 2009

Americans spend almost $2 billion on Halloween candy each year. Halloween is a sugar festival that can cause adverse health effects such a contributing to type 2 diabetes, childhood and obesity. Be sure to select healthy Halloween treats to give out this year.

Candy and junk food is obviously bad for our children. Schools are not even selling it any more. Candy really can wreck havoc on your health for many reasons. First, the majority of sweets are made exclusively from refined sugar which has absolutely zero nutritional value. In addition, this sugar builds up in the blood as glucose and this stored glucose turns itself into fat causes weight gain.

The refined sugar in sweets also plays havoc with you’re energy levels which can cause mood swings, stress and fatigue. In addition, too many sugars from candy can lead to digestive disorders, headaches, gum disease, tooth decay, a malfunctioning immune system. (more…)

Paxil Ordered to Pay Woman $2.5 Million for Her Baby’s Birth Defects

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Monday, October 19, 2009

PHILADELPHIA — A jury ordered GlaxoSmithKline to pay $2.5 million to a woman whose son was born with serious heart defects after she took the antidepressant Paxil during her pregnancy.

The closely watched verdict handed down Tuesday in Philadelphia was the first of about 600 similar cases pending across the country that blame Paxil for heart problems and other birth defects.

The jury found GlaxoSmithKline guilty of negligence but not outrageous conduct, and rejected punitive damages. The company vowed to appeal.

“The adverse events started to come in the late 1990s, early 2000. The evidence was overwhelming and alarming,” said lawyer Jamie Sheller, who represented plaintiff Michelle David. “They could have known this way, way before they did, way before they changed the label in 2005.”

Paxil was classified as a drug with no known link to increased birth defects from its introduction in 1992 through 2005. The Food and Drug Administration began warning in September 2005 that Paxil may be associated with birth defects and strengthened the warning four months later.

David, 28, of Bensalem delivered her full-term son, Lyam Kilker, in October 2005.

He was diagnosed with heart defects two months later and spent five months in a Philadelphia hospital, undergoing surgery to repair two holes in his heart, lawyer Jamie Sheller said Wednesday. He also has a third, separate heart defect and will need at least one more surgery as he grows, she said.

David, a dance teacher and former Philadelphia 76er cheerleader, has no history of heart defects in her family, her lawyer said.

GlaxoSmithKline argues that birth defects occur in 3 to 5 percent of all live births, whether or not the mother took medication during pregnancy.

“The scientific evidence does not establish that exposure to Paxil during pregnancy caused his condition,” the drugmaker said in a statement. “Once approved for use, the company acted properly in marketing the medicine, including monitoring its safety, updating pregnancy information in the medicine’s labeling as new information became available, and in communicating important safety information to regulatory agencies, the scientific community and the public.

Plaintiffs lawyers will continue to pursue punitive damages in the hundreds of remaining cases, the next of which is set for trial in Philadelphia in November.

“We’re starting to chip away at this story, but even as we speak, we’re still fighting them, documents are still being produced, depositions are still being taken,” Sheller said.

Sales of Paxil totaled $849 million last year.

Paxil has competed fiercely in the marketplace at times with rival antidepressant blockbusters like Eli Lilly’s Prozac and Pfizer’s Zoloft. The drug no longer has patent protection and now competes against cheaper generic versions.

10 Foods Most Likely to Make You Sick

Leafy Greens, Eggs, and Tuna Are Among Foods Mostly Like to Cause Food-borne Illness

By Todd Zwillich

WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDOct. 6, 2009 — Here’s a surprise: Some of the healthiest foods may also be the most likely to cause food-borne illness.

That’s the conclusion in a report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The report shows leafy greens, sprouts, and berries are among the most prone to carry infections or toxins.

“We don’t recommend that consumers change their eating habits,” says Caroline Smith DeWaal, the CSPI’s head of food safety programs. Instead, the group is trying to point out vulnerabilities in the nation’s food safety system as it lobbies Congress to beef up enforcement.

The group analyzed CDC data on food illness outbreaks dating back to 1990. They found that leafy greens were involved in 363 outbreaks and about 13,600 illnesses, mostly caused by norovirus, E. coli, and salmonella bacteria. (more…)

Blindly Following the Sick and Twisted Yellow Brick Road to Genocide

By Sherri Kane

Los Angeles–Spreading propaganda through TV and films is a flashback from the past. On national television, “Oprah’s health wizard,” Dr. Mehmet Oz, on his new ABC TV show, rolls up his sleeve to demonstrate how easy it is to get a swine flu shot.

He turns to his studio audience and says “You’re all gonna get it,” after which a pre-selected scene of all smiling, cheering, and clapping people, is spliced in for public persuasion.

The audience is completely unaware that this “SHOT” could leave them very sick, crippled with various nerve disorders and auto-immune diseases, or possibly even killed.

“You must take this to be prepared. Because this virus was brand new, we could not attack it, our antibodies wouldn’t work against it,” Oz lectured.

“What a load of hogwash, pun intended,” retorts public health expert, Dr. Leonard Horowitz. “Dr. Oz has just exposed himself as a propaganda pimp for the drug cartel. If what he claims were true, we’d all be dead right now.”

Dr. Horowitz has issued a stunning rebuke of Dr. Oz, and his guests on the show, now playing on YouTube titled, “Dr. Horowitz Rips Dr. Oz Apart on ABC’s H1N1 Flu Vaccine Fraud.”

The idea that saline solution was what Dr. Oz was administered, in place of the actual vaccination, is a reasonable consideration given the fact the rest of the show was outrageous propaganda.

Dr. Oz is, after all, a stickler for reading food labels. He cautions everyone about toxic ingredients. On his ShareCare website, Dr. Oz claims, “The front of the package isn’t even as revealing as the outside of a new car. It might look seductive, but you really have to check what’s under the hood to see what it’s all about. The ingredient list is where all the answers are.” He also states that even when ingredients are revealed, they can be deceiving.

Dr. Oz states, “Ignore what’s on the front of the package and go directly to the food label and ingredient list.

The irony here is that the ingredient list is missing in boxes of flu vaccines! For someone that is such an expert on reading food labels, Dr. Oz failed to report that even doctors remain generally clueless about what is actually in these vaccines. Company patents seem to be the only place wherein a complete list of possible ingredients are available. How many doctors do you know would make the time to scour patent records for vaccine ingredients? Apparently, Dr. Oz is not one.

To make matters worse, on this particular segment, Dr. Oz’s guest star, Anthony Fauci from the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Disease, is known to have co-patented Interleukin 2 (IL-2), one of the newest “proprietary” vaccine additives called “adjuvants,” alleged to help boost effective immunity against anything white blood cells contact that is foreign. Fauci has been harshly criticized for receiving royalties for IL-2, licensed by the US Government to CSL Biotherapies–A Merck & Co. subsidiary that developed the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) and tested it at the Rupert Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI).

Murdoch’s tight connections to Merck and CSL largely explains all the news propaganda pushing the “cervical cancer vaccine” on young girls and boys. Merck Director, Thomas H. Glocer, who also directs Reuter’s News Service, also helped in public persuasion. (more…)

Why You Need a Routine Mammogram

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

It’s not a perfect detector, but studies show it keeps death rates lower.

October 1, 2009

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women behind lung cancer. The risk for women of getting it in their lifetime is about 1 in 8, though the risk of dying from it is 1 in 28, says the University of Pennsylvania’s Oncolink resource. Men can get it, too but the risk is much lower.

Without a mammogram, women may not know they have breast cancer until it is advanced and much harder to treat. Mammograms can find breast cancer as much as two years before a woman or a doctor can feel a lump, according to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Finding and treating it early, before it spreads helps 97 percent of women survive five years or more. (more…)

Poll finds two-thirds will delay kids’ immunization or not get shots at all

By David Morgan

updated 7:51 p.m. ET, Wed., Sept . 30, 2009

WASHINGTON – Nearly two-thirds of U.S. parents say they will hold off having their children vaccinated against the H1N1 swine flu or will not get them immunized at all, according to a survey released on Wednesday.

The findings, published by Consumer Reports, underscore one of the main challenges facing the Obama administration as it readies a massive swine flu vaccination roll-out — how to persuade the most vulnerable people to protect themselves against the new virus.

H1N1, which emerged last March and became a pandemic in June, puts children and young people at greater risk than the elderly for severe illness and death. Pregnant women and people with underlying medical problems such as lung disease or diabetes are at higher risk.

Consumer Reports, a magazine published by the nonprofit advocacy group Consumers Union, surveyed 1,502 adults by telephone from September 2-7. (more…)
