Calcium pills are often praised for helping to build strong bones. However, the consumption of calcium pills- which are commonly found in drug stores- has recently been inspected for hidden dangers. Now researchers are saying that calcium pills may raise heart risk. Despite this finding, it is important to not stop taking calcium pills without consulting your doctor first. Some calcium pills may contain artificial ingrediants which could be raising heart risk as opposed to the calcium itself. Looking for calcium supplements at natural health food stores may be the best way to consume calcium safely.

Many parents tend to place emphasis on their children getting enough
sleep. And although sleep is essential for proper growth in young
children, it is also beyond important for adults as well… and in many
households, that is forgotten. Adequate sleep is imperative for people of
all ages to achieve optimum health. Sleep deprivation can lead to several
health problems, including high blood pressure and reduced insulin
sensitivity. Adults under 60 years of age who sleep 5 hours or less a
night, including naps, triple their risk of developing some form of heart
disease compared to people who sleep 7 hours a night. As these statistics
show, two hours can make all the difference. However, between work,
school, family, and friends, many wonder where is the time to find seven
hours (nearly 30% of a day) of sleep. The solution? Make time. Above your
job or social life, your health should always be your top priority.

A recent study identified that nitrites and nitrates used in the
preservation of meats may increase the chances of bladder cancer based on
over 300,000 people. The 70,000 people that are diagnosed with bladder
cancer every year in the US are reported being in contact with smoking,
arsenic, and now nitrites and nitrates. 0.3% of individuals during a 7
year experiment were diagnosed with bladder cancer from nitrates and
nitrites. Though this is statistically significant data, it remains
questionable. The study did not say whether or not the 0.3% were smokers
or not, which would greatly increase their chances. It is not viable to
create a new preservation method for 0.3%, when other chemicals also lead
to bladder cancer. Research should be done to find another safer way, but
most likely the researched methods will not be fiscally applicable.

Comment on The Gulf Oil Spill and Seafood Safety by Dr. Buttar's Blog Mistress

Some fisheries on the Gulf Coast are finally reopening after the tragic
oil spill for both commercial and recreational fishing. The elected
officials and agencies claim that the water is safe again to resume
fishing, however various independent scientists report discoveries of
lurking oil. The fisheries should postpone their reopening until all signs
of oil are completely eradicated. There are many ways PAH's can be
absorbed by aquatic life, and the lax seafood monitoring via the FDA would
allow potentially poisonous food to be distributed to the public. Previous
studies have shown that certain shellfish such as oysters can be
contaminated with heavy metals from oil up to several years after the
spill. These heavy metals are also known to build up through the food
chain- this is known as bioaccumulation. A much more in depth study needs
to be conducted to create a viable estimate on the actual level of
contamination visible in aquatic life in the Gulf Coast region.

Comment on Cancer Cells Feed on Fructose, Study Finds by Dr. Buttar's Blog Mistress

Researchers at UCLA find that cancer cells can “readily metabolize
fructose to increase proliferation”. These findings were published in the
journal Cancer Research. Interestingly enough, when feeding cancer cells
both fructose and glucose, the cells only used fructose to grow. Fructose
plays an active part in most Americans’ diets. In fact, U.S. consumption
of high fructose corn syrup went up 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990.
Some states, including California and New York, have already put an
additional tax on sugary sodas to “defray the cost of treating
obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.” It
is hoped that the federal government will think in the same way, and make
efforts to reduce the amount of fructose in common foods that may very
well be contributing to thousands of deaths every year.

Comment on Relatives of Those with Autism Show Eye-Movement Deficits by Dr. Buttar's Blog Mistress

New findings by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)
suggest that the relatives of those diagnosed with Autism show
eye-movement deficits. Several in depth genetic studies have been
conducted trying to determine information regarding the genetic basis of
Autism and its symptoms. It has been proven that it is common for
relatives of an autistic child to have behavior variants as well,
including OCD or communication problems. Instead of trying to prove their
theory correct, the researchers at UIC are focusing mainly on calculating
the odds of a couple with eye-movement deficits having an autistic child.
Soon, there will be much more to learn about this fascinating discovery.

The recent recall of several million boxes of popular, kid-friendly cereal
has many Americans doubting not only the safety of their food, but also
the trust they place in the United States' food safety programs. It was
discovered that a chemical known as "methlynapthalene was in the packaging of major brand cereals". Methylnapthalene is toxic to lung cells, and is thought to be also toxic to red blood cells. Consumers notified Kellog's of "strange taste and oder", in addition to their symptoms which ranged from nausea to diarrhea. Among the cereals that were recalled include Apple Jacks, Fruit Loops, and Honey Smacks... sugary cereals that kids especially, love to eat. Possibly the most disturbing part of this event, is that young children were put at risk by eating such contaminated cereal. These companies and programs need to strengthen their control over food safety immediately, so as to ensure that nothing like this happens again.

Great information on the cherry juice. I have been drinking it for the past six months and it works wonders. Whenever anyone asks me about how I sleep so well, I tell them about the cherry juice and how good it works.

Sleep is an incredibly vital element to a healthy life. Unfortunately,
insomnia and other sleep related problems prevent many from being able to
fall asleep or stay asleep. These foods are proven to "induce feel-good
relaxation chemicals" which will slow your nerves and calm your brain, so
that it becomes easier for you to fall asleep. They are a more natural
alternative to sleeping pills and aids, and are also much healthier for
you. If remedies like this were more well known, it is likely that common
sleeping pills would not be used nearly as often.

Overeating has become a common problem that many Americans face. Boredom, anxiety, and grief are all easy to mistake as hunger. Overeating can lead to a variety of health problems, including obesity. Fad diets that starve
you down until you reach your optimum weight are also likely to induce
overeating; a concept similar to binge eating. It is important to learn to
deal with and manage your emotions in healthier ways. Exercising, going
